| Enhanced Bioremediation |
|
Naturally occurring organisms in soil and groundwater break down a large range of organic contaminants. Through enhanced bioremediation these organisms are provided with an environment where they can grow and break down contaminants at a higher rate. This is done by the addition of oxygen (either through sparging or oxygen releasing compounds) and nutrients. Georem employs microbiologists to ensure that our bioremediation interventions are as effective as possible. Prior to large scale bioremediation projects the suitability of the soil matrix or groundwater environment is done to design a tailor-made intervention. Ex situ or In situ bioremediation can be done, depending on site requirements and constraints. For ex situ bioremediation the contaminated soil is removed and treated in a treatment area or biopile. In situ bioremediation is undertaken in situations where the contaminated media is not excavated or removed. This is usually due to infrastructure of operational constraints. In these situations the subsurface environment is modified by the addition of oxygen, nutrients and micro-organisms to enhance bioremediation in the soil matrix and groundwater. A variety of other environmental factors may be manipulated to enhance the natural processes breaking down pollutants, creating oxidising or reducing environments as needed.
